The History of Longden & Co.

Who Was Longden & Co.?

Longden & Co., established in 1849 in Sheffield, was a key player in the UK heating industry before the introduction of school and Edwardian column radiators. Operating out of the historic Phoenix Foundry on Furnace Hill, active since 1793, Longden & Co. produced a diverse range of heating equipment, from cast iron radiators to warm air stoves, fire grates, and cooking appliances.

Although they didn’t achieve the global recognition of giants like the American Radiator Company or Crane, Longden & Co. made a significant impact on British radiator manufacturing during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The company claimed to have played a pivotal role in popularizing hot water radiators across the UK, helping to lay the foundations for domestic central heating.
