What Was the Sunbeam Radiator?

The Sunbeam radiator, part of the broader category known as church radiators, featured cast iron loops connected to a base at both the top and bottom. Designed no later than 1897, it became one of the most popular early radiators in Britain, particularly before American competitors established themselves in the UK during the early 1900s.

Frequently installed in public buildings such as museums and libraries, the Sunbeam became one of Longden & Co.’s hallmark products. By 1897, the company proudly advertised that over 10,000 Sunbeam radiators had been installed across the UK, including at prestigious sites like the Natural History Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
